When your tummy suddenly starts

doing its own thing

Sometimes the digestive system seems to react in an unpredictable way:

After one meal, everything remains fine; after another, you experience bloating, pressure or pain. Going to restaurants becomes a challenge, and your thoughts increasingly revolve around food, your symptoms and the nearest toilet.

At the same time, blood tests, ultrasound scans or endoscopies may show no abnormalities. However, this does not automatically mean that your symptoms are imaginary.

SIBO is a possible explanation for persistent, irritable bowel-like symptoms that can easily be overlooked in routine examinations.

What exactly is SIBO?

SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and refers to an excessive number of bacteria in the small intestine.

Put simply, there are too many bacteria in the small intestine - an area where only relatively small numbers of bacteria are normally found.

These bacteria may break down components of food earlier than intended. This process produces gases and other metabolic by-products, which can cause symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and changes in bowel movements.

My entire childhood, adolescence and early adulthood were marked by stomach ache and changes in bowel habits. All the tests came back normal – classic irritable bowel syndrome or, as I later discovered, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

I was intolerant to various foods and had to avoid certain foods for a whole year whilst still at primary school. As a result of this intense experience, I have been furthering my education in the field of gut health for over 10 years. A key factor in being able to help many people was my understanding of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

It is therefore my wish to pass on my knowledge to other therapists, in order to help as many people as possible who suffer from gastrointestinal problems.
